Implemented in partnership with the European Union (EU), this project was launched in 2009 by a consortium made up of ASBU, the Permanent Conference of Mediterranean Audiovisual Operators (COPEAM), the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and a group of seven public radio broadcasters from the Mediterranean rim, namely France Télévisions, leader of the project, EPTV (Algeria), JRTV (Jordan), ERTU (Egypt), in association with radio broadcasters ORTAS (Syria), SNRT (Morocco), and TéléLiban.
The main objectives of this project were recalled, on the occasion, and they are namely "informing the public of the Euro-Mediterranean partnership, easing coverage and broadcasting of Euro-Mediterranean current news by radio- broadcasters of the South, stimulate dialogue and mutual understanding of populations of the two Mediterranean shores and promote cultural diversity and gender equality.
ASBU Director-General Slaheddine Maaoui praised the success of this project which has helped, in one year, produce 300 current topics, some fifty current affairs magazines and ten documentaries, totaling 17 hours of joint production.
Mrs. Stephanie Carette spoke, in her capacity as representative of the European Delegation in Tunis, of a project that is "rich by the quality of its participants, innovating and ambitious," reminding that this project is part of the regional communication and information programme, coming under the European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP) which has benefited of 19 million euros over 4 years, more than half of which were dedicated to the southern shore of the Mediterranean. An amount worth 2 million 100 thousand
uros was dedicated to the Euromed-News project.
Mrs. Paola Parri, representative of COPEAM voiced satisfaction at the presence of women in this project, be it at the level of organisation or contents of programmes. She wished, in turn, that this rich project would continue.
